2023 Indie Author of the Year

The Indie Author Project is excited to announce the 2023 Indie Author of the Year. It’s hard to believe that we are already in the fifth year of this annual award. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to celebrate some truly incredible indie authors over the last few years, and this year is no exception.

Each year, one winner is selected from a group of authors who have had their titles chosen by librarian judging committees as the best indie-published ebooks in their regions through the preceding year’s Indie Author Project regional contests. The Indie Author of the Year is chosen by a team of industry experts on the basis of marketability, overall impact, personal brand, and potential for the author to break out.

The 2023 Indie Author of the Year is Jami Fairleigh of King County Library System, Washington

From the author:

“I’m a bi-racial, Japanese-American author, urban planner, and hobby collector from the rainy Pacific Northwest. I write short fiction and novels for adult and middle-grade audiences. I love fantasy—I was the kid who explored cupboards and followed woodland paths *SURE* I’d happen upon a doorway to another world. Happily, I’ve found writing is one way into those magical places.”

Jami was chosen as the 2023 Indie Author of the Year out of the winners of the 2022 regional Indie Author Project contests by a judging committee comprised of:

  • Carl Pritzkat, COO of Publishers Weekly
  • Guy Gonzalez, Chief Content Officer for LibraryPass
  • Leslye Penelope, award-winning author with St. Martin’s Press
  • Kiera Parrot, Director of Darien Public Library
  • Mitchell Davis, Indie Author Project Founder and Digital Publishing Entrepreneur
  • Ann Cox, Collection Development Librarian II at Ingram Content Group

“One of the biggest challenges as an indie author is exposure. Like any author, we want to share our stories as widely as possible, but many of us are new to the industry and have no network to help us share the news about our books. The Indie Author Project and Biblioboard change all that by providing a bridge, connecting us and our stories to our amazing libraries.

I am honored and beyond thrilled to be the 2023 Indie Author of the Year! This recognition means the world to me, affirming the value of storytelling from independent voices. Your support has touched me deeply, and I’m genuinely thankful.”
